Banqueting House, on Whitehall, is the only remaining building of the Palace of Whitehall, home to monarchs from Henry VIII to William and Mary. The timber palace burnt down in 1698, but Banqueting House - the first Palladian building of its kind in England, was saved.
With funding from the Technology Strategy Board we created a choice of stories and games for visitors. Both invited you to step back to January 30 1649, the day Charles I was exectued, and meet a variety of characters who may have been in and around the palace at the time.
From stable boy and scullery maid to natural philosopher and lady in waiting, characters conveyed information about the palace and the surrounding area at the time, through a mixture of audio and video.
The final character you would meet was the executioner, and if you chose the game at the beginning, you would have to give him a handful of coins in order for him to sneak you into Banqueting House to look at the ceiling painted by Rubens in 1634.
